Tandoori-Spiced Salmon w/ Pickled Cucumber

Tandoori-Spiced Salmon

Hands down, this has become my most favorite salmon recipe. I came across it in Saveur Magazine and combined a lot of the steps and played around with the spices a little bit to better match what I had in my spice cabinet and ended up with this winner. This recipe does not use a completely traditional Tandoori spice mix, but I like to think it’s close enough in spirit? (My main spice swap is substituting smoked paprika for chili powder, but I think the smokiness adds an interesting note. If you don’t have smoked . . . → Read More: Tandoori-Spiced Salmon w/ Pickled Cucumber

Winter Cooking: Chicken Goulash with Sour Cream Dumplings

Chicken Goulash with Sour Cream Dumplings

This is the blog post where I announce a triumphant return to blogging on the regular.

Really. This time I mean it. And what better way to start mid-January 2018, than with a recipe for a smoky and delicious chicken goulash? This dish originally comes from Food and Wine Magazine but I’ve played around with it a bit and finally landed on this version. It’s a meal I make at least three or four times throughout the fall and winter. One of my favorite parts of this dish (in addition to the ease it comes together with), is the nut, rice, and curry leaf garnish. In Portland, sometimes you can find curry leaves at New Seasons, but . . . → Read More: Chicken with Red Curry and Saffron

FFwD: Compote de Pommes Two Ways and Apple Compote Buckwheat Muffins with Hazelnuts, Raisins, and Molasses

This week’s French Fridays with Dorie is Apple Compote Two Ways or as the French would say half of it, Compote de Pommes Two Ways. I made mine the second way — basically I kept cooking it until it was super think. Then added some butter. I was expecting something like dark apple butter, but it was really just more like thick applesauce. And unfortunately, I’m not a huge fan of applesauce. So, I decided to use it to make . . . → Read More: FFwD: Compote de Pommes Two Ways and Apple Compote Buckwheat Muffins with Hazelnuts, Raisins, and Molasses

Savory Spice Shop 7857 SE 13th Avenue Portland, Oregon 97202

Recently, I was invited to spend a bit of time hanging out at Savory Spice Shop in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland. I can’t believe I had never been there before! It was so much fun – especially since you can smell as well as taste all of the spice blends. And although Anne unfortunately couldn’t make it, her husband Jim showed me around, gave me a tour, and encouraged me to . . . → Read More: Savory Spice Shop in Sellwood + Ghostly Spiced and Roasted Pumpkin (or Squash) Seeds
